Podcast Synopsis: Investigation: The Digital Borders is a podcast series that explores the connection between the digital and social worlds. We can now pay in-store with our phone, generate income on social media, and track our favorite celebrity's every move… wait a second. Viewing the rapid growth of digital technology and services through a sociological lens, this series asks: Who truly benefits from this? Do these digital technologies provide everyone with the same benefits and access, or do they bring more harm than good? Each episode will explore the harms and barriers vulnerable populations encounter when interacting with different aspects of the digital world and how we can resist. So let the investigation begin.

Episode one: Investigating Online Databases: Undocumented Immigrants and ICE Raids: After the 2024 election, there has been constant news of ICE and its mission of mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. How does ICE obtain information about undocumented immigrants? In this first episode of Investigation: The Digital Borders, investigate how ICE is using online databases and ways people are using social media and online maps to advocate for undocumented immigrants.

Why this topic?:

Throughout my time in the Applied Digital Sociology Master's program at Hunter College, I gained a new perspective on how I approach the topic of immigration. The connection between the digital world and immigration is largely unexplored, and throughout my time in the program, I aimed to find connections between the two. The inspiration behind this podcast came from the research paper I did for the sociology of databases course. The topics of online databases, ICE raids, and undocumented immigrants came from the section of the paper exploring the theoretical digital IDNYC. I was so honored to include my professor, Dr. Nikko Stevens, from the sociology of databases class, as a guest on this podcast. This podcast is a passion project of mine (editing was such a long process!), and I learned so much of the behind-the-scenes! I dedicate this podcast to my parents. They are the inspiration for every immigration paper, study, and podcast that I do. I was honored to deliver a basic story of my parents' immigration. As I stated in the podcast, every undocumented immigrant's story deserves to be heard, shared, and honored.
